Sandal wood seized ..


The Sulur police on Tuesday arrested two persons and seized a truck laden with nearly 600 kg of sandalwood worth over Rs. 10 lakh.

On instructions from Deputy Inspector General of Police, Coimbatore Range, M. Ramasubramani and Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore Rural District, N. Kannan, night patrolling has been intensified in Sulur.

On Monday night, Sulur Sub-Inspector Murugesan along with volunteers from the Friends of Police found a lorry parked under suspicious manner. When the police approached the truck, they found the driver trying to give a slip and remove the vehicle in haste. He also threatened the police with a sickle. The police chased the truck and intercepted it.Driver Mohammed Ali alias Anil (37) of Ganapathy Maniakkarampalayam negotiated with the Sub-Inspector and offered to give a bribe of Rs. 1 lakh, if he allowed the truck to go. He also assured the SI to get the amount from sandalwood smuggling agent from Kerala.

The SI chose to lay a trap and arrest the entire gang. He asked the driver to tell the agent to come with the amount. The agent Ummar (38) came in a car with the cash and called the SI to the bypass road. An armed police team went and nabbed Ummar and recovered the bribe amount as well. The duo had been remanded to judicial custody.
