Lorry owners announce hike in charges

The Coimbatore Lorry Owners’ Association has announced a 15 per cent increase in charges following the hike in petrol and diesel prices.K.S. Kaliaperumal, secretary of the association, has said in a release that the lorry transport sector was already affected as there were more vehicles and the volume of goods handled was low. The increase in diesel and petrol prices would hit the sector.

It could also have an impact on the prices of essential commodities transported from other States.Hence, the Centre should consider reducing the prices, he said.

Meeting

The State-level meeting of the lorry owners’ association would be held in Namakkal on July 13. One of the subjects to be discussed at the meeting would be the hike in petroleum prices.Mr. Kaliaperumal appealed to the lorry transport services related sectors such as lorry booking agents, goods transport association and daily parcel service association to support the increase in charges by the lorry owners’ association.

He also said the Kerala Government should take measures to avoid delay at the Walayar check-post.
