Nearly 2 lakh powerlooms in Coimbatore and Tirupur districts remained idle on Wednesday as job working units announced an indefinite strike demanding restoration of higher rates for fabric making. Textile units that give yarn to job working units have reduced rates for fabric making by 10%, a person representing powerloom weavers’ association in Somanur, a fabric hub, said. They had given a 22% hike last August and have slashed it by 10% recently citing demand slowdown, he said. Powerlooms in these districts produce about 1.5 crore metres of cloth a day and the strike would lead to production loss of around Rs 20 crore per day.
