Dead Fish - Water sent for testing

With hundreds of dead fish floating on Bhavani river at Mettupalayam due to water contamination, officials on Sunday took water samples of the river and sent to the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) laboratory at Coimbatore for testing. This move came after residents started collecting the dead fish on Saturday and Sunday. Mettupalayam tahasildar Sugumaran and municipality commissioner Sundram advised the public to avoid cooking and eating the fish.Officials have also started enquiring about the alleged discharge of effluents from factories into the river.

Bhavani river is catering to the irrigation needs of Erode, Tirupur and Coimbatore districts. The lorry drivers from the Nilgiris and Karnataka, who had the practice of parking their vehicles on Bhavani riverbeds and washing, stopped the habit following stern warnings by the revenue officials. Vegetable mandis also stopped dumping wastes into the river.According to revenue office and municipality sources, action will be taken against those responsible for polluting the river after the results of water samples are announced.
