Activists prevent old tree being cut down in city

Activists of Osai (a Non-Governmental Organisation) and Siruthuli, a public initiative for conserving ecology stopped the felling of a tree on Monday and petitioned the Collector seeking action against officials from the Highways and Revenue Departments for permitting the action.

K.Kalidasan, President of OSAI said that the activists noticed a live tree on Bharathiar Road in Pappanaickenpalayam area near Police Quarters being felled. When the activists resisted the tree cutting, the owner of the adjoining building cited a permission letter from the authorities.

Osai activities alleged that permission had been granted declaring the tree as a dead one and that it could uproot at any time posing danger to road users.Osai activists alleged that for vested and personal interests, if permission was going to be granted for cutting trees stating them as dead, then not a single tree would be left in the City.

Such actions of officials would go completely against the objective of urban greening.Following the development, higher officials from the Highways Department reached the spot and halted the process of cutting down the large tree.
