Coimbatore - Irugur second line to be ready by January ?


Mr. Ram said that the inspection and review of works on Tuesday were aimed at ensuring timely The ongoing works for doubling the railway line between Coimbatore and Irugur are expected to be over by December. After inspection and clearance by the Commissioner of Rail Safety, it will be thrown open for traffic by January, said Divisional Railway Manager, Salem Division, P.N. Ram here on Tuesday. He told after inspecting the works at Hope College Junction and Peelamedu Railway Station. completion of works relating to re-grading and lifting the existing railway line and reconnecting it besides bringing down the old bridge structure at the Hope College Junction.To enable these works, trains had been re-routed on September 22 for 24 hours skipping Coimbatore Junction via Irugur and Podanur. Works relating to re-modelling of the Peelamedu and Irugur railway yards and the one at Podanur were also on.

The second line was almost ready in the entire stretch of Coimbatore and Irugur as well as between Coimbatore and Podanur and only the lines needed to be connected. These works would be over by December. Opening of these lines was expected to ease pathway congestion and ensure timely operation of trains. Mr. Ram then visited the Coimbatore Junction for reviewing the works.

Mr. Ram said that the works related to passenger amenities were in progress while works relating to improvements to the frontage of the junction would be taken up soon. An elevator would also come up at the junction for platform number 1 with connectivity to platform numbers three and four.On the appeal for new train services, the feasibility of the demands and their potential patronage would be studied and proposals would be sent to headquarters, he added.
