conductor helps educate poor !!


At a time when many post graduates opt for a bus conductor’s job, a government bus conductor of the Chungam depot in Coimbatore has completed two master’s degrees and an MPhil, after joining Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC).Meet S Gnanasekaran, the conductor of route 91 bus plying between Saibaba Colony and Kovaipudur, who has persuaded many drivers and conductors to pursue education, and helps poor students complete their education.

“October 2, 1992, is an unforgettable day in my life that was when I joined TNSTC as conductor just after my schooling. However, I was determined pursue higher studies and completed a master’s in Gandhian studies, followed by an MPhil in Gandhian studies and peace. By 2005, I finished another master’s in Sociology. Distance education came in handy to achieve my goal,” he says with pride.

Apart from his relentless studying, he started a social service organisation ‘Sevanilayam’ in 1990 with the objectives of creating awareness on community, medicine and education.Helping poor students with education has been another passion for him. One among the many who have benefited from Gunasekaran’s kindness is Karthikeyan, who worked at a brick kiln. “Identifying one’s talent is vital as they can make it in life if their skills are harnessed properly,” he says.

“The boy was good at swimming. Seeing his interest, I put him at Chennai’s YMCA Sports Club where his innate talent in swimming came to the fore. Thereafter, he was admitted at Loyola College in their sports quota, where he completed a bachelor’s in history. For three years, he represented the college in swimming. After college, he joined National Institute of Sports in Bangalore where he qualified himself in swimming to join as swimming coach in Erode,” he says.

In between his hectic social work and a day job, Gunasekaran is now planning to pursue a doctorate in Gandhian studies.
