Pump room at Housing board sunk

The pump room at a Tamil Nadu Housing Board colony for Government employees at Ganapathy in the city sank a few feet into the ground as the drinking water sump below it collapsed early on Sunday.

Residents alleged that the sump and the pump room had been in a very bad condition for long and representations had been made to the board on this. The residents’ association had asked for the renovation of 100 sq ft pump room and the sump.Poor condition of the sump had led to the bricks becoming too damp to hold the room above it. People living close to this structure heard a sound from it early in the morning. They found that the room had sunk into the sump. The pump room was located on a major portion of the sump. Its floor was actually the roof of the sump.

No one was hurt as it happened quite early, the residents said. Normally, women living in the colony used to check the water level in the sump through an opening provided in the pump room. This was a regular activity to ensure the entire colony did not run out of water. Fortunately, the incident did not occur during one such routine checking, say residents.
