Star rating sought for power supply

The government should introduce star marking for power supply, according to V. Krishnakumar, president of the Indian Pump Manufacturers’ Association.

At a meeting held here recently on “Energy Efficiency in Pumping Systems”, he said that if a five-star rated energy efficient pump had to work in the field and save energy, quality power supply was needed.Otherwise, the energy saving would be only on paper. What was needed for an agricultural pump was star-rated power supply. The State electricity boards should supply star-rated power. In a study conducted in the United Kingdom, it was estimated that energy could be saved by focusing on certain issues in a pumping system.About 40 per cent energy saving could be achieved by selecting higher efficiency, better-sized pump, going in for better installation and maintenance and appropriate system design and control.

Performance

The performance of the pumping system could be improved by component-based and system-based measures. In India, agricultural pumps consumed maximum power and hence the government introduced energy saving measures for this sector. The pumping system also played an important role in energy saving. The agricultural pump market had both organised and unorganised manufacturers.Farmers with low financial capacity were attracted towards the products made by the unorganised sector. These farmers received free power or at low subsidised rate. The government should take steps to promote energy efficient pumps, he said.
