Golden Jubilee Function Of SITRA In Cotten City

PRESIDENT TO INAUGURATE GOLDEN JUBILEE FUNCTION OF SITRA:


IST The President, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam will inaugurate the Golden Jubilee Celebration of The South India Textile Research Association (SITRA) tomorrow in Coimbatore. The Minister of State for Textiles, Shri E.V.K.S. Elangovan will also address the function.

The SITRA was set up as link in the chain of national laboratories in the country, which was sponsored by the textile industry and supported by the Government of India. The Association commenced functioning in 1956 at the premises of the Southern India Mills’ Association (SIMA), Coimbatore. Initially with two divisions, i) Liaison & Statistics and ii) Industry Psychology and 44 members. SITRA has now become one of the largest Research Institutes in India. Presently it has eight divisions and more than 350 member mills and its members are spread over many parts of the country as well as eight foreign nations – Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Thailand, Iran, Nepal, Bangladesh, Nigeria and Indonesia.
Over the past 50 years, as many as 730 publications comprising of research report, mill control reports, focus, trends and monographs have been published by SITRA. Publications of SITRA play a vital role in disseminating the findings of its research and other works.
Research towards developments of machineries, instruments, processes and products resulted in around sixty patents. Fifty-eight developments have been licensed to various companies and those products have helped textile industry in improving quality, increasing productivity, reducing waste and reducing power consumption.
SITRA is equipped with state of the art laboratories for physical and chemical testing, accredited by NABL for ISO – 17025. These laboratories help in conducting basic and applied research for the scientists and many textile units get benefited from these laboratories. SITRA pilot mill accommodates latest spinning machineries available in the world.
Productivity survey, which serves as bench mark for all the spinning mills in India, has become anonymous with SITRA. Around 250 to 300 mills participate in this survey every time. As many as 30 such inter-mill productivity surveys have been conducted in last 50 years.
The outstanding works done by the SITRA scientists have been recognized by many organizations, which resulted in various National and International awards. To name a few NRDC Awards (6 times), world Intellectual Property Organization Gold Medal (2 times), Institution of Engineers Award (4 times), PCRA National Award, Vasvik Research Award, Century Textiles Best Technical Book Award (7 times), etc.
