Common tool room in 50 cents at Coimbatore
Coimbatore:The State Government will give 50 cents to the Coimbatore Industrial Infrastructure Association (COINDIA) to establish a common tool room. This could be either purchased or obtained on lease by the association, the Minister for Rural Industries, Pongalur N. Palanisamy, said.
He said the land would be allocated at the Electrical and Electronic Industrial Estate here. The Government would also give Rs. 1.25 crore to the association for the project.Speaking at a seminar on modernisation of pumpset sector, organised by the District Industries Centre, he said that efforts were on to set up a special economic zone in the district for the hosiery sector. He suggested to the pumpset sector to establish such a zone for the pump and motor-manufacturing units also.
During the last nine months, the State Government had sanctioned projects to the tune of over Rs. 9,500 crore. The Minister urged the industries in Coimbatore to allocate a portion of their profits towards research and development. The Collector, Neeraj Mittal, urged the units to follow the concept of "creative destruction" wherein they could improve the standards of the products. The pumpsets could be made more energy-efficient and weigh less. The industry-institution relationship should be strengthened, he said. The Mayor, R. Venkatachalam, said public demanded more energy efficient pumps and the industry should focus on manufacturing according to the needs of the customers.
The COINDIA president, G. Rajendran, said the common tool room would be set up at Rs. 13.5 crore. While the industry would bring in about Rs. 2.2 crore, the State Government subsidy was Rs. 1.25 crore. The rest would come as subsidy from the Central Government.
