Tirupur going to be a district
The knitwear industry is hopeful of Tirupur becoming a district in tune with its rapid growth on the export front. The State Budget for next year says the government has accepted in principle the demand for creating new districts on the basis of assembly constituencies. The new districts are to be created after completing the delimitation process for parliamentary and assembly constituencies. A Sakthivel, president, Tirupur Exporters’ Association (TEA) said it should be carved out as a separate district, considering its economic potential as an export centre and the growth its growth needs besides adjoining areas.
“The growing volume of international business from Tirupur has earned a unique place for it in the global business map, which in turn created the necessity for forming a separate district to which the overlapping areas of adjoining districts could be ceded,” he added. The knitted garment exports from Tirupur has clocked Rs 10,250 crore (as on December 2006) and is expected to touch Rs 11,000 crore by the end of this fiscal. To boost exports from this town by overcoming the shortage of manpower, the TN government has also proposed to establish training centres in Hosur, Madurai, Thiruvannamalai, Tirunelveli and Dharmapuri that would help Tirupur knitwear garment sector for getting the trained manpower.
