U.S. Consul General visits TNAU

The launch of the Agricultural Knowledge Initiative (AKI) project in India in 2006 has enabled to revive the Indo-US co-operation in the field of agriculture, Consul General of the United States David T. Hopper said here recently.

He appreciated the contribution of Indian agriculture (25 per cent) to the national Gross Domestic Product while on a visit to the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. Commenting on the conflicting views that were rampant about Bt technology, he said: "The key to success of Bt technology in India is only possible through good communication and keeping the people informed through the media."While appreciating the progress of research in Bt brinjal and Bt rice, he said that the conflict with regard to Bt cotton could be laid to rest only by enabling farmers get higher prices for their cotton produce.
