State Govt also joins hands with BU for nano facility

The nano facility centre, which Bharathiar University is setting up together with the University of Arkansas and the Defence Research and Development Organisation, will now have the participation of the State Government too, Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam said here on Monday.The Rs. 1-crore grant the State gave to the university would be used as seed money to start the work, he told reporters.

The State Government recently invited the stakeholders for discussions on the modalities of setting up a full-fledged manufacturing facility.When the memorandum of understanding between Vijay K. Varadan of the University of Arkansas and Mr. Thiruvasagam was signed in January this year, it was agreed that the centre would offer courses at the graduate, postgraduate, M. Phil and doctoral levels.Dr. Varadan had said that Bharathiar University would also serve as incubator for manufacturing facilities, and the University of Arkansas in research and development.

The State Government had now decided to set up a big facility on 100 acres of the university land. "The first phase will come up at a cost of Rs. 100 crore. It will expand gradually. Initially, it will make devices designed by the DRDO for military purposes. It will also manufacture preventive medicine for Parkinson's disease, medicine for HIV/AIDS, cancer, a device to indicate heart attacks and a chip that will aid the visually challenged in reading books," Mr. Thiruvasagam said.
