TNAU developed new cotton culture

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) here has developed a new cotton culture meant for summer irrigated condition. This culture- TSH 9704- is highly drought tolerant and moderately resistant to leaf hopper pest. It is capable of yielding 1,749 kilogram per hectare of cotton, with a staple strength of 28.1 MM, according to T S Raveendran, Director, Centre for Plant Breeding and Genetics of the University.

The university has also developed two promising Extra Long Staple (ELS) cotton hybrids- TCHB 4510 and TCHB 2310- which were currently undergoing on-farm testing, he said. The span lenght of the hybrids were 36.3mm and 35.7mm respectively, Raveendran said. With 'stem weevil' pest in cotton becoming a serious problem in Tamil Nadu, intensive research on bio-intensive stem weevil management measures, with entomofungal bio-agents, was underway in the Univesity, which would be recommended as a seed treatment to farmers of the state.
