Women hostel @ Tirupur

A women’s hostel coming up at Netaji Apparel Park in Tirupur.Construction of working women hostels at Netaji Apparel Park (NAP) and Tirupur Export Knitwear Industrial Complex (TEKIC) is expected to be completed by August. Because of lack of land in Tirupur and peripheral areas, Tamil Nadu Water Investment Company Limited (TWICL) has joined hands with NAP and TEKIC, both promoted by Tirupur Exporters’ Association (TEA), to execute the project. The hostels will give migrant workers, especially women, a decent and safe accommodation close to their workplace.

TWICL is executing the Rs.6-crore project by the Union Commerce Ministry as grant under the Industrial Infrastructure Upgradation Scheme. NAP gave two acres of land while TEKIC provided around 3,000 sq metres of land on a long lease at a nominal cost, as industry contribution. Four blocks at NAP will house 500 inmates and 300 others will be accommodated in two blocks in TEKIC in Mudalipalayam, sources said. At present, four or five women workers share a room in a line of houses in the congested town.

Sources said that they had tried hard to find Government lands in the town and periphery but they could not find them. The hostels have been designed to provide a good accommodation with recreation and common facilities. Since it has been constructed fully availing the Government grant, the sources said that they would keep the cost at the lowest possible, well enough to cover maintenance and running costs and upkeep of the buildings.TEA president A. Sakthivel said the modalities were yet to be worked out. “We will approach the authorities to have more number of rooms constructed as those envisaged now are not adequate to meet our requirements,” Mr. Sakthivel said.
