73 medical camp conducted
The district administration has said that 73 medical camps have been conducted under the State Government’s Varumun Kappom scheme. Totally, 80,605 people in the Coimbatore Health District have benefited from the camp, a press release from the administration said on Friday.Under the scheme, 280 camps should be held in two years. Out of the target of 140 for this year, 73 had been held till the end of June. The release said 29,760 men, 39,089 women and 11,756 children were screened at the camps.Of these people, 32,698 were referred to specialists and 6,636 to Sidha practitioners. And, 2,031 people were sent for advanced treatment. The release said 3,163 people underwent electro cardiogram test to check for heart ailments and 3,358 were scanned for other problems. The camp also organised group discussions and counselling for 1,503 people on nutrition, ill-effects of smoking and alcohol consumption, blood pressure and kidney disorders.The release said 29,060 pregnant women had benefited from the Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddiar Maternity Assistance Scheme in the financial year of 2006-2007. The total allocation of funds for the district that year was Rs.2.90 crore. The Government had allocated Rs.4.38 crore for the current financial year, during which 8,720 women had benefited so far.
The Janani Suraksha Yojana offered an aid of Rs.700 for deliveries in hospitals and Rs.500 for those at home. This was offered to women in families whose total annual income was below Rs.12,000. The Government had allotted Rs.62.19 lakh for the 2006-07 financial year. The release said 8,716 women who gave birth at hospitals and 8,952 at home benefited from the scheme. The sum provided for the current financial year was Rs.24.98 lakh. So far, 1,764 women who gave birth at hospitals and 1,790 at their home got assistance this year.
