Awareness programme on organic farming
Madurai-based Movement for Reduced Inputs and Tools for Sustainable and Natural Agriculture (MRIT SNA) conducted an awareness programme on organic farm certification at Coimbatore recently.According to Mannar Mannan, founder of the movement and organiser of the campaign, MRIT SNA has a model integrated organic farm at Thenpalanji, Madurai. The main purpose of this farm is for the demonstration of organic practices.
This nine-acre model is divided into 10 plots.Different crops are raised in different seasons by the farmers with guidance of the expert team of the trust.Training programmes were conducted at Madurai, Tiruchirapalli, Coimbatore and Chennai .Hundreds of farmers, industrialists, agriculture entrepreneurs, students and agricultural produce traders took parting in it.The programme content included introduction of organic agriculture, certification, certification agencies and procedures for organic certification.It also highlighted organic standards such as Indian, European and American, documentation and cost of certification.
The programme also focussed on the comparison of various options of certifying agencies/standards.
