‘unusually large’ thyroid gland removed
Surgeon K.S. Rajkumar with Saroja after the latter underwent thyroid surgery.The Kovai Medical Center and Hospital here has said that an ‘unusually large’ thyroid gland was removed from the neck of a 75-year-old woman.Surgeon at the hospital K.S. Rajkumar said thyroid was a small palpable structure in front of the neck weighing approximately 30 grams.This could enlarge up to 300 to 500 grams in various diseases including cancer.The woman, Saroja of Saravanampatti near the city, had come to the hospital with a huge swelling in the neck because of thyroid disease.She came with difficulty in breathing and voice change caused by the pressure on the wind pipe and voice box.A computed tomography scan showed it was extending from behind the chest bone to the thorax.Dr. Rajkumar removed the swelling that weighed almost one kg.
