84 people filed bail applications
As many as 84 of the 166 people accused in the 1998 Coimbatore serial bombings case have filed bail applications with the sessions court that tried them. The blasts took place in February 1998, killing 58 people and injuring more than 150.On August 1, Judge K. Uthirapathi delivering the judgment, had found 69 Al Umma men, including its leader S.A. Basha, guilty of conspiring to plant bombs, storing and transporting them. Four other were found guilty of lesser charges. The court had set People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader Abdul Nasser Madhani free. Seven others have also been granted bail. The judge had told all those not found guilty of major charges to file bail petitions. Eighty-four people have filed petitions before the court for bail.The punishments for those found guilty are likely to be announced on Monday.
