Rehabilitation centre opened
A rehabilitation centre for children with mental disabilities was opened here on Wednesday.Started by the Green Valley Charitable Trust, Ashraya, will provide residential care for girls with mental disabilities above the age of 12.“The parents of such children do not have too many options as there are very few care centres for girls above 12,” says Rethcy Ralph, Managing Trustee of the centre.The centre would take in children with multiple disabilities such as mental disability coupled with orthopaedic impairment. They would be given training in motor, social and communication skills.The institution would also function as a day care centre, mainly for the benefit of working parents who have no time to be with the children throughout the day.The ultimate aim of the centre, however, is to make the child with disability fit to attend a regular school. But, this would depend upon the capacity of each child, Ms.Rethcy points out.Ten children have been registered. Most of them are from very poor backgrounds, Ms.Rethcy says.The prizes for the painting competition organised by the centre were distributed on the day of the inauguration. More than 25 children with mental disabilities participated in the competition.
