SIEMA's appeal
The Southern India Engineering Manufacturers’ Association (SIEMA) has appealed to the Centre to include representatives from the industry in the proposed committee to discuss the issue of principal employer paying for the Employees State Insurance (ESI) scheme for outside job workers. In a memorandum to the Centre, the association president, C.R. Shanmughasundaram, suggested that the committee should include leading labour lawyers, representatives of industrial associations and industrialists. He pointed out that a Division Bench of the Karnataka High Court had dismissed an appeal filed by the ESI Corporation requesting to direct the employers to pay ESI contribution to the outside job workers too. The Corporation had filed a special leave petition in the Supreme Court, which was also dismissed.
