IELT 2007 inaugurated

Inaugurating a national conference on “Innovations in English language Teaching - IELT 2007” organised by the faculty of English of the School of Science and Humanities of the Karunya University, she said there should be “Englishness” in the use of English and should be taught in a “universal” manner.There should not be different ways of teaching English.Deliberating on the teaching environment that existed in India, she said that the teaching of the language had not been efficient, result-oriented and need-based.“The teaching community should be able to trace the level of the students’ competency in English and moderate their pedagogic strategies to make English learning enjoyable.

New horizons should be explored in developing innovative techniques in teaching English”, Dr. James said.Joseph Thomas, Registrar, Karunya University, highlighted the efforts taken by the English Department to enhance the communicative skills of the students through the classroom and language laboratory exercises.Maya Joseph, Director of School of Humanities, introduced the conference theme.The aim of the one-day conference was to share and exchange views and perspectives on innovative techniques to be formulated and implemented in classrooms and computer-aided language laboratories.The plenary sessions opened with lectures of V. Prakasam, Director, Central Institute of English and Foreign Language, Hyderabad, and K. N. Sivaraman, Former Joint Director of Collegiate Education.
