Shame to Coimbatore police

A Central Government employee was beaten up in the public and at a police station by a head constable, when he went to the aid of a road accident victim. One year after the incident, the Tamil Nadu State Human Rights Commission has ordered the head constable, Syed Ali, attached to the Puliyakulam police station in Coimbatore, to pay a compensation of Rs 25,000.The Silk Board employee, CA Radhakrishnan had on February 1 last year, offered his mobile phone to a girl who had met with an accident, so that she could inform her parents about the accident.

On seeing this, Syed Ali hit Radhakrishnan with a lathi and warned him not to interfere with police work. When Radhakrishnan contacted the police control room, he was told that he could complain to senior officials who were rushing to the spot. However, when he returned to the accident spot, Syed Ali started abusing and assaulting him before dragging him to the police station where Radhakrishnan was attacked again. Though he managed to file a complaint against Syed Ali, no action was taken. Later, Radhakrishnan approached the SHRC."This Commission is shell-shocked to see that the petitioner, being a respectable and decent officer of the Central Government, has been treated like a hardcore offender and dreaded criminal," the SHRC Bench, comprising A R Selvakumar and S Paramasivan, observed.

The Commission also recommended the State Government to take strict disciplinary action against Namachivayam, inspector of the station, for not taking action on Radhakrishnan’s complaint. The panel also ordered an inquiry against the inspector.
