Co-optex fair

Vistiors have a range of saris to choose from at the Co-optex fair that opened in Chennai on Wednesday.Silks from Arani in double shades and with embroidery, printed silk and cottons from Coimbatore and Salem, heavy silks from Kancheepuram… the list of items on display at the 10-day-long Co-optex exhibition that opened at the University of Madras on Wednesday is long.

The ‘Patronise Handlooms’ exhibition, on at S-20, Centenary Buildings, on the Chepauk campus of the university, also has pillow covers, bedsheets, readymade shirts, denim materials, carpets and floor mats. Such exhibitions are regularly organised at schools and colleges to promote handlooms and the co-operative sector, Co-optex officials said.

The special campaign was inaugurated by Madras University Vice-Chancellor S. Ramachandran, in the presence of Co-optex Managing Director M.P. Nirmala. A press release said that during Deepavali last year, the Chennai region of Co-optex achieved an all-time high sales of Rs. 6.8 crore. During this Pongal, the sale was Rs. 5.34 crore.A special discount of five per cent and special rebate of 20 per cent is being offered on products at the exhibition.
