World Wetlands Day
Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History will be observing World Wetlands Day on February 2 on Singanallur Lake.A release from P. Pramod, Nature Education Officer of the centre, said that February 2 marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 1971, at the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea.Each year since 1997, government agencies, non-governmental organisations, and groups of citizens at all levels of the community have taken the opportunity to undertake actions aimed at raising public awareness of wetland values and benefits in general and the Ramsar Convention in particular.
The international theme for this year’s event is ‘Healthy Wetlands, Healthy People,’ focusing on the positive results of maintaining healthy wetlands including the provision of food, medicines and clean water.The event calls for attention to the negative impacts on human health resulting from poor wetland management, such as water-related diseases from poor sanitation, floods and water pollution.Bird watching and study of the biodiversity of wetlands too are planned for the student members of Salim Ali Nature Club Network.The programme will start at at 7.30 a.m. and will end by 12 noon. , Nintystudents and teachers from four schools will attend.
