3000 House Owners Observe Fast
Residents of 3,000 houses affected by the Land Ceiling Act that resulted in a ban on registration of notified properties will observe a fast at Ondipudur on Tiruchi Road on March 30. According to a release from R. Mohan, president of the Association of Victims of Land Ceiling Act, these house sites were bought about 25 years ago at various places within the Coimbatore Corporation limits.Some of the members of the families were forced to attempt suicide
Most of the sites ranges between 1.5 cents to five cents in about 93 layouts. Most of the owners were employed as workers in various mills that are defunct today. The Government had imposed a ban on registration of notified properties in these layouts declaring them as properties on lands classified under the Land Ceiling Act. Even payment of development charges and regularisation charges could not be done because of this. Some of the members of the families were forced to attempt suicide. The residents said that the agitation would be intensified if their demands were not met.
