Fate Of The Sewage Treatment Plants Project

A consensus on deciding the fate of the sewage treatment plants project eluded the Coimbatore Corporation’s all-party meet on Tuesday. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) suggested that the decision for re-tender or any other course of action could be left to the Government. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), the Communist Party of India and the Congress accepted it.

But, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam refused to commit on this. The representatives of these parties said they had to discuss the issue with the other members. The AIADMK was not prepared to accept any other option than a re-tender. The DMK members were said to have expressed concern over the rising cost of construction materials. They pointed out that this could impact the cost of the projects.

On the Pilloor drinking water scheme, the parties decided to approve as per norms those packages in the Council for which bidders had quoted acceptable rates. As for two packages with rates much higher than the estimates, the Council could decided on re-tender, the parties observed.
