Mock Drill @ BPCL
Personnel in a mock disaster control drill at the Bharat Petroleum’s LPG filling plant at Peelamedu on Tuesday.A mock drill on disaster management control plan was conducted at the Bharat Petroleum Corporation’s Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) bottling plant at Peelamedu on Tuesday. The objective was to check the preparedness of the machineries concerned in reacting to the situation and to identify areas where there could be improvement on the reaction measures.

As part of the drill, a scene was enacted wherein process operator sounded a siren indicating a suspected leak of LPG from flange of sphere 1 drain ball valve due to gasket failure. An LPG vapour cloud was also noticed.The scene also included a faulty spark arrester failing to stop the ignition of fire that got flashed back to the sphere.
As per the plan, the Territory Manager, S. Thangavel and Territory Coordinator, Pradeep Nair rushed to the spot and an on site emergency plan was put in place. Water sprinklers started spraying on the threat area to prevent the fire from spreading further.Squads in charge of fire fighting, communication, traffic, first-aid and technical squad started the actions in line with the Disaster Control Management Plan. An emergency hospital came in place near the security gate. Fire tenders joined the action, with doctors, medical aid and paramedical staff along with ambulances from KMCH, KG and Surya Hospital taking a plunge. The entire drill was performed under the supervision of S. Raghunathan, Joint Chief Inspector of Factories, Coimbatore, and S. Ismail, Deputy Chief Inspector of Factores, Coimbatore and other mutual aid members. A briefing on the preparednesswas also discussed.
