Key Hole Surgery Introdused In Gem

Coimbatore-based GEM Hospital Director Dr C Palanivelu, who has been instrumental in introducing the "Key hole surgery" or Minimum invasive surgery, has embarked on a research to use the "key hole concept" for cesarean surgery. It might sound bizarre, but the eminent surgeon, who had entered into the Guinness Book of World Records by performing non-stop surgeries for 15 long hours, is confident of making a breakthrough in this sphere.

The surgeon, who removed gall bladder through vagina, using endoscopy, without leaving any scar in the abdomen, says that he has just launched the project and still has a long way to go before making it possible. Dr Palanivelu, who has the distinction of having conducted a number of international live tele-surgery workshops, has innovated surgical instruments and infused new methods and procedures to perform minimally invasive surgery for a wide spectrum of diseases. A breakthrough in using the laparoscopy technique in the cesarean surgery section, would no doubt, be a boon to women as the conventional surgery required a lengthy incision and would leave no scar.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 30 per cent of American women who gave birth in 2005 had a cesarean delivery, up from 6 per cent in 1970, 17 per cent in 1980, and 23 per cent in 1990. It is a major abdominal surgery, so it is riskier than a vaginal delivery. In this surgery, women are more likely to have an infection, excessive bleeding, blood clots, more postpartum pain, a longer hospital stay, and a significantly longer recovery.
