Plantation Workers Appeal To Govt

With the Government issuing a draft notification on minimum wages (Rs. 101.50) for plantation workers in the State, the planters here propose to appeal to the Government to reconsider the quantum. The workers were receiving about Rs. 65 a day as minimum wages and the planters’ associations in the Nilgiris and Nilgiris-Wayanad recently entered into revised three-year wage agreements with the unions in these areas.

The revised wages in these areas are about Rs. 90 a day totally

“These are negotiated wages and the minimum wage cannot exceed the negotiated ones,” says a source here. Minimum wages for plantation workers have not been revised after 1995 and even now, the same should not be more than the agreed wages, adds the source. The small plantations will be hit if the notification is implemented. The source adds that planters are not opposing revising the minimum wages, but the quantum proposed.
