Gem Hospital here has done a live demonstration of Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES) for surgeons in the South Korean capital of Seoul to watch. Hospital Director C. Palanivelu told presspersons here on Wednesday that accessing problem areas in the body through natural orifices, such as mouth, nose, vagina and anus, was demonstrated through video conferencing technique to surgeons attending an international workshop on therapeutic endoscopy in Seoul.
Doctors in Seoul and Hyderabad interacted with Dr. Palanivelu and his team during the procedure that was done at the hospital on April 12.
Dr. Palanivelu said gall bladder and appendicitis had been removed by using the trans-vaginal endoscopy method. The scope was passed through the vagina to reach the gall bladder and remove it. As access was not through the abdomen, scars on this area were avoided, the surgeon said.
