Transport Department Guidelines For Autorickshaws
The Transport Commissioner, following the directions of the Chennai High Court, has issued a set of guidelines to the Regional Transport Officers on reorganization the plying of auto rickshaws with three seats. In a release the Transport Commissioner, C.P. Singh said that auto rickshaws were found to be violating the permit conditions and plying in competition to mini buses by picking up passengers at bus stops.
No conductor should be allowed to travel in the autorickshaws along with the driver. Autorickshaws should not be allowed to stop and pick up passengers in at least 200 ft before bus stops. The autorickshaws should be parked only in the parking zones allocated for this purpose identified by the regional transport authorities. The RTOs have been asked to conduct special checks in this regard and autorickshaw drivers have been warned that very serious and stringent action would be taken against the auto rickshaw drivers violating the permit conditions as per section 86 of the Motor Vehicle Act.The guidelines issued now has asked the Transport Department officials to ensure that autorickshaws shall not operate carrying persons more than the permitted seating capacity and there should not be any alterations inside the autorickshaw creating additional seating capacity more than the permitted limit.
