Mechanised Tools For TNEB

A mechanical saw used by Tamil Nadu Electricity Board to prune tree branches. As monsoon approaches and men from the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board get ready to prune the tree branches, mechanised tools are coming in handy this year. The Board has purchased pruning machines and power saws this year.

“There should be a minimum clear distance between the power lines and trees. In order to maintain this, we prune the branches periodically and this is done manually. With labour becoming a problem and to save time, we have purchased the equipment this year,” says V.G. Manoharan, Chief Engineer (distribution) for Coimbatore region. Initially, the equipment were used in places that had high voltage lines. In rural areas, it is difficult to get men to climb up coconut trees to cut the branches. Similarly, if there is a problem in the evening hours, it becomes difficult to climb the trees and clear the branches.

The tools help in such circumstances. This year, it is used in the city too, he adds. Another advantage is that even unskilled men can handle the equipment. Now, these tools can be used. The height can be adjusted and is easy to use. Though only a limited number of equipment has been put in use now, the board plans to use it in more areas within the city too. Further, the time needed for such exercises can also be brought down by using machines.
