Sivakumar Supports His School's Improvement

The alumni association of Sulur Government Boys Higher Secondary School has taken the initiative to construct separate classroom blocks and toilet facilities for the school. The members of the alumni association, who have formed an Old Student’s Educational Trust, have mobilised Rs. 84.5 lakhs, towards construction works. According to S.Velusamy, Secretary of the trust and Head Master of the school, donations to the building fund have been given Income Tax exemption under section 80 G. The IT exemption for donations had accelerated the flow of contributions from among the general public and would be a motivating factor for more donations to come in, he said.

Mr.Velusamy said that the drive to mobilise funds for renovation works and new building construction was mainly under the leadership of former student and actor R.Sivakumar. Such initiatives from former students and the contributions from philanthropists had helped the institution undertake the works on its own rather than seeking Government assistance, he added. Chief Educational Officer S.Karmegam lauded the association for the initiative taken to improve the infrastructure of the 84-year-old institution, which would in turn benefit the community and help the school offer a better learning environment for the students.

A 19-member committee of trustees had been formed and the works were expected to commence shortly. The committee included Mr.Sivakumar, M.Natarajan and Stanley Peter. The construction works would be carried out in consultation with the Education Department and the State Government.
