Skill Development And Certification Programme

This is part of the nationwide skill development and certification programme of the council to improve skill level among construction workers.
Workers, including masons, carpenters and plumbers, received certificates at a function organised here on Monday by the Builders’ Association of India, Association of Consulting Civil Engineers and Indian Institute of Architects (AEB Forum). The three associations jointly identified workers who have been trained for the certification. They now look at training more workers jointly with the council.

Organisations such as the National Highways Authority of India now insist that at least five per cent of the workers in the construction company should be certified by the council to bid for their projects. The certification would gain further importance in the coming years and it would be essential for all workers, according to industry representatives here.
The AEB Forum plans to organise BuildMat 2008, an international construction fair, here from January 23 to 26. The fair will have over 400 stalls and the organisers have received provisional confirmation for nearly 125 stalls. This will be organised once in two years and the aim is to bring in new construction materials and technology to Coimbatore, according to S. Balasubramanian, chairman of the event.

Preparations for the exhibition were formally launched here on Monday. Briefing presspersons about the AEB Forum and the exhibition, the heads of the three associations said it would focus on training workers. Also, the Association of Consulting Civil Engineers was considering a testing centre for consumers to test the construction materials used in their buildings. The builders’ association would open its Tirupur centre later this week.
