TNAU's Monsoon Predication
Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has predicted above normal, normal and near normal to normal rainfall across the State during the ensuing southwest monsoon. The university’s Agro Climate Research Centre has developed the forecast based on the Southern Oscillation Index and the Sea Surface Temperature values, using Australian Rainman software. The historical rainfall data was collected from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University research stations in districts. If there was no research station in a district, data from the Rainman software was used.
According to the prediction, the above normal rainfall (more than 110 per cent of the long-term mean seasonal rain) is expected at Mettur in Salem district and Ambasamudram in Tirunelveli district. Normal rainfall (90-110 per cent of the long-term mean rain) is expected in Thiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Dharmapuri, Villuppuram, Cuddalore, Perambalur, Salem, Namakkal, Erode, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Karur, Madurai, Dindigul, Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari and Pudukottai.
There will be near normal to normal rain (10-100 per cent) is expected at Gudalur in the Nilgiris, Nagercoil in Kanyakumari, Chathirapatti in Madurai, the Vaigai dam in Theni, Palladam in Coimbatore and Tuticorin and Krishnagiri districts. In hill areas such as Udhagamandalam, Yercaud and Kodaikkanal, normal rainfall is expected.
