Worst Accident
The van that collided with a lorry at Sulur on Sunday. Five persons were killed when the van in which they were travelling to Madurai from here collided with a lorry on Tiruchi Road at Sulur, more than 15 km east of the city, around 1.30 a.m. on Sunday. Thirteen persons, including the driver of the Kerala-bound lorry, Sajit, suffered injuries and were admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. The deceased were identified as Rajendran (45), his wife Kamakshi (40), their son Shankar (15), Mahadevi (30) and van driver Vijayakumar (21). The police said a group of 17 persons was going to a temple in Madurai. Their van was crossing a marriage hall at Sulur when it collided with the lorry coming in the opposite direction. The front portion of the van was crushed under the impact.
