Centre For Science Development

A Centre for Basic Science Subjects Development will be set up at the Bharathiar University to make courses in science attractive and useful, its Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam said. “Graduates of basic science subjects are not found to be industry-ready. The assessment by bodies like Confederation of Indian Industry and National Association of Software and Services Companies has made revamping of curriculum an absolute necessity. The centre will strive to co-ordinate among various government departments and set up science centres and mobile laboratories across the country,” the Vice-Chancellor said.

With K. Natarajan, professor and head, Department of Chemistry, as its director, the centre would create a platform where educationalists at all levels would interact to integrate course curriculum from higher secondary to post-graduate levels in science. This was expected to facilitate the development of courses in line with recent advances in not only science, but also emerging employment opportunities.

The Vice-Chancellor pointed out that the problem of low number of students taking up science courses should be addressed urgently. Without promotion and development of basic sciences, technology and industry would be starved of inputs.“To further the progress of our nation towards becoming a super power, attention on basic sciences is the need of the hour,” the Vice-Chancellor asserted. He also assured that the efforts of the university in improving the standard of basic science programmes would be a continuous one.
