Strike:
Drivers owning three-wheel mini cargo autorickshaws in the city staged a demonstration in front of the Red Cross Society buildings on Huzur Road on Tuesday opposing the decision of the Government to bring the mini cargo vehicles under the life time tax bracket. The auto drivers said that the vehicles were operated by unemployed educated youth with poor economic family background and it would be difficult for them to pay the tax.

Four found dead
A women and her three children were found dead in a well at Nagalingapuram in Pongalur on Tuesday. It is learnt that Sathyakala (22) was upset as her husband refused to permit her to visit her native. She is suspected to have committed suicide by jumping into the well along with her children. The Avarampalayam police are investigating.

Workers Clash:

Tense moments prevailed at the Irugur railway container terminal on Tuesday when two groups of headload workers clashed with each other demanding the right to off load the cement bags that arrived there.Already, there is a controversy over the right of employment between the headload workers in Singanallur and Irugur and those who had come from the erstwhile container terminal in North Coimbatore Junction. Police reinforcements were rushed to the spot to diffuse the situation. Revenue and railway officials held talks and resolved the issue.

Arrested:

The special teams of the city police on Tuesday arrested Senthilkumar alias Kumar (33) of Sivaganga district and recovered four two-wheelers from him. Following frequent incidents of two-wheeler lifting reported in various parts of the city, Commissioner of Police K.C. Mahali formed special teams led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic), K. Thondiraj. The teams arrested Kumar and recovered two mopeds and two motorcycles that were stolen from Rathinpurai, Ganapathy and on Gokhale Street in Ram Nagar.

Bank Opened:

G. Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University inaugurated a new branch of the Indian Overseas Bank at Saravanampatti. He said Coimbatore is all set to emerge as an entrepreneurial and educational hub. Nearly 38 per cent of the enrolment in educational institutions is from outside the district. He urged the banks to be proactive in supporting the educational sector and the industry.

Student's Plea:

Fifteen students of a private teacher training institution in Udumalpet created a flutter at the Collectorate on Tuesday when they came with rat poison. They alleged that they were being prevented from appearing for the exams and demanded the intervention of the administration to sort out the issue.

BSNL Announcement:

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Coimbatore, has announced that due to technical upgradation, broadband multi play services in Coimbatore Secondary Switching Area (SSA) are likely to be interrupted between 2.00 a.m. and 6.00 a.m. on July 10.

Grievances day :

The Superintending Engineer of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, Coimbatore North, will conduct a grievances meeting on July 9 at the office of the executive engineer, Seeranaikenpalayam,at 11 a.m.

Passed Away:

K.T. Venkatarama Reddy, Chairman of KTVR Vijaydeepa Group, passed away on Monday. He was 84. He was the founder chairman of the Builders’ Association of India, Coimbatore Centre. He is survived by two sons and one daughter.
