Residents Staged Demo

Residents of Vasavi Street at Maniyakarampalayam in the city staged a demonstration on Monday to draw the attention of the Coimbatore Corporation to problems in the supply of drinking water. Alleging erratic supply, they said most of the families in the area had been struggling for water over the last few days.

Though the Corporation said it supplied water every alternate day in the city, this area got it only once in three days. Besides, the duration of supply also had drastically come down from four hours to just an hour. The upset residents even turned down Corporation water officials’ offer to provide water by lorries, to overcome the shortage. They dispersed only after being assured of a permanent solution.

An official said the problem on Vasavi Street was a result of the delay in resuming the supply of Pilloor water. The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board had stopped supply on July 8 in order to carry out maintenance works. The supply was to resume the next day. But, leaks in the main line at Vayampalayam had delayed the resumption of supply by a day. This had a cascading effect on interior areas such as Maniyakaramapalayam even till Monday. Shortfall in supply was normal for a few days since the resumption of supply after a shutdown for maintenance or because of line bursts. The residents who protested on Monday would get normal supply on Tuesday, the official said.
