English Textbook With Mistakes Replaced
The copies of the textbook “Communication Skills in English”, prescribed for second year undergraduate students of Bharathiar University, that were withdrawn by the publisher were replaced with those published by the university. This followed a directive from Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam after an inquiry was held when the book published by a reputed publishing house was found to have many errors. The Vice-Chancellor had instructed the publishing house to print a new book based on the material prepared by an ad-hoc committee that consisted of faculty members of the university. Accordingly, the book was printed free of cost and is now ready in bookstalls.
Nearly 10,000 copies of the book have arrived in Coimbatore. The Vice-Chancellor, as announced earlier, has requested students to get the new book by giving the old book in the shop they had purchased it. “They can exchange the old for the new and also get Rs. 3 from the shopkeeper as the new one costs Rs. 75 as against the earlier one that cost Rs. 78,” R. Palanivel, the chairperson of the ad-hoc committee, told .In the meantime, the committee had also uploaded the first two units of the book on the university’s website for the benefit of the students, as the subject was part of the curriculum.

“This is an eye-opener to the university. More care should go into providing study material for students. I am grateful to the faculty and students who brought the errors to my notice,” Mr. Thiruvasagam said.
