Identity Cards Handed Over

The Commercial Taxes Ministry was taking up review of circle-wise Commercial Tax offices for ensuring the projected growth in tax collection, Minister for Commercial Taxes S.N.M. Ubayadullah told reporters on Friday. After handing over identity cards under the Merchants Welfare Board scheme, he reviewed the performance of the Commercial Taxes Department.

During the current fiscal from April 1, 2008 to August 2008, the department netted a tax revenue of Rs. 9,459 crore but during the same corresponding period last year it was only Rs. 8,069 crore. As far as Coimbatore was concerned last year the tax revenue was Rs. 699 crore and this year the tax revenue was Rs. 741 crore. However, the growth rate in terms of tax realisation was only six per cent and efforts were being taken to ensure the growth at 20 per cent.

On grievances such as long wait at the Walayar check post on the Tamil Nadu – Kerala border, Mr. Ubayadullah said that Kerala was resorting to an intensive checking of vehicles reportedly in the wake of the lesser tax revenue. He said that he would take it up with his Kerala counterpart to resolve the problem and ensure speedy clearance of trucks.
