Kavundampalayam Garbage May Convert Into Playground

Committee Chairman R. Kalyanasundaram says the proposal for the recreation facility is a condition it has laid to approve the Corporation’s proposal to shift its school from a cramped premises at K.K. Pudur to a five-acre site on the erstwhile garbage yard. The proposal will be placed before the Council on September 29 for its approval. With garbage dumping shifted to Vellalore, the Corporation first planned a zoological park at Kavundampalayam.
With the zoo needing a bigger area, the Corporation has planned to allot five acres for the school, two acres for a biomass gasifier crematorium, 1.71 acres for a power sub-station, 4.50 acres for separate burial grounds for two communities and six acres for solid waste management. The committee’s approval paves the way for the school to be constructed on the five-acre site, despite some parties in the Council saying that it should not be built near a crematorium and burial grounds. Mayor R. Venkatachalam had clarified at a Council meeting that cremation and other rituals would not affect the students or the functioning of the school.
But, councillors are not in favour of too many buildings being constructed at Kavundampalayam. Committee Chairman R. Kalyanasundaram says that after the allocation made for various purposes, the rest of the land should be used only for a park and a playground that had facilities for many sporting activities. It should be used to promote talents in these areas in the students. The committee has also suggested that the park should be named after former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai.
