Mid-day Meal Recipe Contest

Participants try out recipes at the mid-day meal recipe contest held at Avinashilingam University in Coimbatore. Students and young professionals tried out innovative yet nutritious recipes at the ‘mid-day meal recipe competition’ conducted by the Department of Food Science and Nutrition of Avinashilingam University here on Wednesday.

Sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, the contest is aimed at collecting region-based recipes as part of the process initiated by the Government to revamp the noon-meal scheme, explained S. Premakumari, Professor and Head of the Department, Food Science and Nutrition. The university was acting as the co-ordinator for the nationwide programme and was in charge of the Southern zone. It had selected 11 centres throughout the country for conducting the contests.

Anyone from the public could participate. The food prepared should be ideal for a mid-day meal. It should contain 450 kilo calories, 12 g proteins and should be in a form acceptable to children. It should also be available at minimum cost. The ingredients used should be available locally and the recipe should be easy to step up for large scale preparation too, she said. The response had been good from the Coimbatore zone, which included Erode and Madurai regions as well, she added. More than 50 participants took part in the contest. The contests were expected to conclude by November. The university would collect and compile all the recipes and forward the same to the Department of Science and Technology.

It would also suggest good recipes that could be adopted by the Government for the noon-meal scheme. The best recipe in each zone would be awarded Rs.4,000 as prize. In the southern zone, the contest would be held in Chennai and Kottayam too.
