The strange visitor had strayed into human habitations and was seen along Thadagam and Koilmedu areas for the last one month. The efforts of the Forest Department to push the deer back into its habitat went in vain. Following information, the Conservator of Forests, Coimbatore circle, R. Kannan, and the District Forest Officer, I. Anwardeen, ordered an inquiry into the death. Forest Veterinarian N.S. Manoharan and Range Officer A. Soundarrajan along with Forester M. Senthilkumar recovered the body and conducted inquiries. The barking deer that came under schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act had suffered injuries on its head and neck. Officials suspect the deer to have been chased by street dogs and in the process of escaping to safety it would have been hit by a truck.

Following the sighting of a black panther near a cave in the hillock near the Dharmalingeswarar Temple near Madukkarai on the outskirts of the city, the Forest Department has stepped up vigil in the area to prevent the panther from straying into human habitations in search of prey. Officials said the presence of a black panther was a good indicator of the presence of the gene pool of an endangered species.
