Residents Plan Road Blockade

Delay in laying a service road has made it difficult to access areas near the Ondipudur flyover in Coimbatore. For the students and office goers of more than 40 residential colonies in Ondipudur, a 3-km walk to reach the bus stand at Sungam ground bus depot has become a daily routine.

Residents of Weaver’s colony, Pudhu Itteri street, SMS layout, Tagore Nagar, Annai Sathya Nagar, Shastri Nagar and Cheran Nagar to name a few, located in the areas near the Ondipudr flyover, take the path under the Ondipudur flyover, to board buses. Traffic snarls at the junction near the flyover during peak hours add to their woes. “Even during an emergency, fire service buses and ambulances will have to take a long route outside the flyover to reach the houses in these areas,” says V. Ranganathan, treasurer of the Ondipudur Flyover Service Road Retrieval Committee formed by the residents of the area.

Lack of streetlight and poor drainage facilities are the other problems faced by the residents. “Because of open drains, it becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes and poses health hazards. During nights, taking the path under the flyover becomes risky as there are problems such as pocket pickers,” he adds. The committee along with Peelamedu Consumer Voice have planned to stage a road blockade on November 3 on Tiruchi Road near the flyover, if their long-pending demands were not conceded. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the residents of 45 colonies convened on September 21.

The committee has come up with a charter of five demands, which includes expeditious laying of service road on either side of the flyover as it was originally planned, providing amenities such as drainage, storm water drain and streetlights in the flyover area and operating buses such as 1 A, 1 B, 1 C, S 1 and S 9 routes from the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) depot as it was plied prior to the construction of the flyover. They also demanded that bus route numbers 69, 69 A, 69-B and 29 should be operated on the original permit route, via Stanes Colony, Kamarajar Nagar and Weaver’s Colony.

“Owners of houses residing along the proposed service road alignment have already given their consent in writing for handing over the required land at a guideline value of Rs. 1,105 per sq.ft,” says R. Jayabal, president of the committee. Of the total outlay earmarkd for bridge construction, there is a balance of Rs. 4.95 crore and the Highways Department had clarified that the funds would be used for laying a service road and for compensating the land owners there.
