Coimbatore Mayor R. Venkatachalam has stated that steps were being taken to ensure the functioning and maintenance of 34,629 street lights in a phased manner within the next 15 days. In a statement, Mr.Venkatachalam said that the contract for operation and maintenance of street lights were given to two private contractors in 2005. One contractor was given charge of street lights in south and west zones while the other was entrusted with the work in north and east zones. However, both the contractors failed to carry out the work to the satisfaction of the civic body and brought disrepute to the civic body administration.
On March 27, the council resolved to suspend the contracts. Now, the contract for the operation and maintenance of street lights has been entrusted to Ms.Salzer Electronics Limited and the firm is in charge of ensuring the maintenance of 34,629 street lights in all the four zones of the Corporation. The firm had started operations and within the next 15 days, all the street lights would become functional in a phased manner. The official machinery has also been tuned to ensure the same. Mayor has requested the people to co-operate with the civic body until then.
