Life Imprisonment In Priest Murder Case
The Fast Track Court-II here has convicted and sentenced seven persons to life imprisonment in a case relating to the murder of a temple priest at Angalakurichi in Pollachi in the district on February 22, 2006. The priest, Sakthivel, had constructed a wall around an open space near the temple. Some people living nearby had objected to the construction of the wall and it was demolished after inspection by authorities.
Sakthivel had opposed the demolition. When he was waiting at a bus stop on February 22, 2006, some persons attacked him with sharp-edged weapons. Sakthivel died of the injuries sustained in the attack. Police arrested Manikandan, Mariappan, Panneerselvam, Mariappan, Kandaswamy, Masani, Nagaraj and Easwaran in connection with the murder. The court sentenced the first seven to life imprisonment and acquitted Easwaran.
