Man Gets Capital Punishment For Murder

Mahila Court judge K. Dakshinamoorthy on Wednesday awarded capital punishment for Murthy (45) of Koilpalayam on charges of abduction, rape and murder of a 13 year-old girl. According to prosecutor R. Tamilselvi, Murthy had kidnapped the girl (a distant relative of the accused) on June 2, 2005, and after sexual abuse, he is said to have murdered her and dumped the body in a well in Pethikuttai area of Koilpalayam. The accused was first acquitted by the Mahila Court on April 26, 2006. The parents of the deceased girl moved the High Court seeking review of the acquittal orders. Following a High Court directive, the case was taken up on April 24, 2008. The Judge held the accused guilty of the charge of kidnap, rape and murder. He awarded 10 years rigorous imprisonment each for charges of kidnapping and rape.

He also ordered that the sentences should be served continuously and not concurrently. He also awarded capital punishment “hanging till death” for the charge of murder and said that in the event of the capital punishment not being executed the accused should serve both the 10 years RI separately.
